There's No Place Like Home

Saturday morning dawned with a sizzling blackness, the sky above was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel. Despite the mysterious climatic conditions a solid group of runners congregated at Roxbury, just like almost every Saturday. "It appears there is a vortex in the space-time continuum," declared Associate Race Director, Scott, as part of his pre-race announcements. "We don't think it will be anymore dangerous than ice or downed wires, but be careful out there." Race director Bob captured the mood with trivia, "If you're driving at the speed of light and turn on the headlights, do they work?" Thus far, there has been no correct answer.

The original intention was to run the 4.3 mile High Bridge course, but space-time vortecies are more challenging to navigate than just a sparking electric wire, as this week's runners soon found out. The entire field dropped into a wormhole with the exact diameter of High Bridge Road. Those who have since remerged have had their times recorded. Said winner, Jeff Sheldon, " I was charging up High Bridge when all of a sudden I found myself falling through space into another dimension where I was swallowed by a giant Liger, a combination lion/tiger. When it spit me out, I landed on the table at the finish. Beats being eaten."

Lynn swam with prehistoric manta rays, Harry raced chariots with Ginger and Dudley at the front, Scott piloted a planet to the end of the universe, and the Bussom family just instructed Madelyn to click her sparkly shoes and say "there's no place like home."

This week's Chris Norris fact: There are in fact five elemental forces; Strong, weak, electromagnetic, gravitation and Chris Norris. Clearly, this week's strange events were the result of an imbalance of one of these forces. Since all are constants, save Chris Norris, we only hope that he is back to his usual self next week. We also hope the rest of the field will return sometime before next Saturday, when we run the Roxbury 5k.
