Race Report by special guest reporter, Nate Mahrer

Not many runners look at a race and say, what if we ran this in both directions at the same time? Brian Vanderheiden does. What inspires such brilliance, or is it craziness? It could be one of the following quotes: (a) "Two paths diverged in a wood, and I took the one last traveled by" or (b) "You're going the wrong way!" "How would they know which way we're supposed to be going?". The smart money's on the movie quote.

But how does one pick who runs which way? Men vs women? Students vs teachers? Republicans vs Democrats? Arm warmer wearers vs normal people? Oh, the possibilities. Luckily our maven just read alternating names off the list.

This race brings out many philosophical questions. Which way is faster, up the hill or down the hill? And if you're chosen to run 'up the hill', why do you start running down Apple? And if you're running 'down' why does it seem like running up Rocky Mountain and Hemlock lasts forever? These are the deep thoughts of a Roxbury runner.

Our race today was won by Ken Merrick and Therese Krebs, who both ran down the hill. Congratulations to both. If this was your first Roxbury race, thanks for putting up with the zaniness.

Upcoming races:

•Next week's race will be the 8.2 mile Judd's Bridge course. Jumping in the Shepaug at the turnaround is optional.

•July 4th the town of Washington hosts a free 5K at 9am in Steep Rock Preserve in honor of Major Stephen Reich, a Washington resident who died while serving in Iraq.

Happy 4th!
