Ed Sandifer Handicap Race - Down Chalybes

This Saturday was a great day for the 2.4 mile Ed Sandifer handicap race, attended by Ed himself!

We are proud to honor Ed's contributions to Roxbury running by running this slightly complicated race. We're not saying you have to be a math PhD to figure it out, just that it is really, really helpful. There are two important Ed-related facts that this author would be remiss should they go unmentioned: first, when Ed goes running, he dresses like a circus. Fluorescent colors, wild patterns, fluorescent wild patterns, and always a Roxbury shirt. In his running kit, he can probably be pinpointed from space--not unlike the Great Wall of China. Second, during a Roxbury race, you will get passed by Ed. He will always offer a greeting, followed by a witty comment, a bit of coaching, or perhaps a short lecture on a topic you didn't know you were interested in. Ed, we miss you. We look forward to running with you again.

Huge thanks to all the volunteers who made the handicap race happen: Chris for calculating start times, Mike, Nate, and Dirk, for starting the race, the West Conn math department for helping with the stopwatch and popsicle sticks at the finish and adding some intellectual heft, and Scott for arranging bagels and juice for the post-race presentation. This year's winner was Alison Masopust, thanks not only to her outstanding running but also to her consistent sandbagging. In her post-race interview she said, "You guys think I'm late because I don't get up in time, but I've been purposefully late for each Chalybes race so I can win the handicap! Suckers!"

Thanks to everyone who came and ran. We look forward to seeing you next week for the 3.52 mile Hemlock course. See you then!
