Ferron, Merrick Co-Winners; Krebs Prevails For 15th Time

ROXBURY – Nicholas Ferron, 29, and Ken Merrick, 43, were the co-winners Saturday, June 23, over a 6.4-mile course at the weekly Roxbury Road Race Series. They were timed in 40-minutes, 40-seconds – a 6:21-per-mile pace – over the rolling layout, which included a trip along part of Minors Bridge Road and Falls Road. Theresa Krebs, 43, of Roxbury won the women’s division for the 15th time this season. She placed ninth overall in 44:10.

The series will resume Saturday, June 30, at 8:30 a.m. with the second annual Brian Vaderheiden Seek Race, which is named after one of the runners. Half of the field will run a 2.4-mile course in one direction and the other half of the entrants will run it the opposite way. There will be no entry fee.

The Bill Burley MidSummer Championship will be held Saturday, July 21, at 8:30 a.m. over a 5.0-mile course. There will be a $5 entry fee that can be paid that morning between 7 and 8:20. Proceeds will go to the Roxbury park improvement fund. The event is named after the founder of the series, who also served as the head director from 1977 through 1979. The latest inductees to the Roxbury Road Race Series Hall of Fame will be announced during a ceremony following the race. The top overall male and female runner in the MidSummer Championship also will be honored and each will receive a $10 gift certificate to the Woodbridge Running Co., which has an outlet in Brookfield. The races, which are sanctioned by the Roxbury Recreation Commission, start and finish near the Everett Hurlburt Community Park on West Apple Lane.
